I have been wondering lately where this particular trend started. The trend in wedding photography to portray the bride and groom in this very straightforward, un-romantic (or is it?) serious, standing side by side no kissing or hugging but maybe holding hands. Like this.
It dawned on me that the inspiration comes from Grant Wood’s American Gothic painting that is so iconic now, even humorous in it’s seriousness. Could marriage really be that hard? Yes, American pioneers did have their work cut out for them.
Or maybe this now classic Arbus image, which is so disturbing to some that it inspired the twin girls in The Shining who haunt Jack Nicholson in the hallway. I love the idea of Diane Arbus is having an influence over wedding portraits.
Any more ideas?
